The process of the American presidential election allows electors (representing the American people) to choose the president and vice-president; this process is governed by rules in the Constitution.
The appointment of electors and the candidate selection rules are established by each State which is derived from traditions more or less formalized. Since the second half of the twentieth century, this process takes approximately one year.
