WRITTEN COMMUNICATION

Introduction

Let’s begin with a paradox.

The impact of new communication technologies has also greatly changed the ways that we enquire information.

We’re changing from a society of readers to one of viewers.

Studies are showing that people under 25 do not get their information from print media rather they get it from TV, radio and Internet.

Though, print vehicles remain the 1st provider of information in companies.

While meetings are an important way to communicate with employees, the most common form of interaction on a regular basis is through the print medium.

Unfortunately, employees’ publications are often extremely boring.

- Why are such publications so boring?
- How can companies make them more interesting to employees?

The rules of high-impact publications.

? Good publications professionals

The biggest problem companies have in producing publications, such as a monthly magazine or newsletter, is that they simply do not get good communicators involved in the process.

At many companies, the « house organ » is given to the lowest level employee in the Corpcom area.

Companies have to realize that the competition for such publications is not what other companies are producing for their employees but the national and local media that the employees are exposed to.

Today’s employee is a sophisticated consumer of information because he’s:

- better educated

- more interesting in seeing something like in his/her newspaper than a list of football scores and pictures of employees with several years of service to the firm.

? An appropriate distribution

There is no successful newsletter without an effective distribution.
