    Introduction

This document which is entitled ?Addiction? is an extract from the magazine Speakeasy written by Claudia Wolosin in January 2007.

In a word, the article focuses on the alcohol problems in the UK. Moreover, it deals with the differents symptoms caused by addiction to illicit substances. Substances likes tobacco, drugs, food or activities like gambling (parier) can cause an addiction. The point of the addiction is surpassed when you are having too much of a substance and when it completely dominates your life.

A picture illustrates the topic of this document.

In a first part I’m going to comment on the binge drinking in the UK and to continue, in a second part, I’m going to talk about the symptoms during periods of withdrawal (sevrage).

I ? The binge drinking in the UK

Binge drinking means drink heavily during an evening. This problem is the most acute (grave) in Scotland.

Today, the number of alcohol-related deaths are 3 times as much as in 1991.

Apart from health problems, alcoholism can indirectly cause death when people drive when they have been drinking and have road accidents or some pedestrias who have also been drinking can be hit by a car while walking near the roads. Some others die in house fires because they accidently light a fire.

We can conclude that it’s a big problem in the UK and that it seems not being resolved.

II ? Symptoms and treating addiction

The first condition required to trat an addict is to have him admit that he has a problem because an addict usually thinks he is in control of the situation.

    • Physical symptoms of an addiction : helath problems, when you can’t keep yourself from taking a substance, when you need it more and more to have a sense of well-being and euphoria.

    • Psychological symptoms : when you start lying to your family and friends about your consumption, when you have problems at schools or at work, when you become secluded, when you feel irritabl or depressed.

    Conclusion

In a nutshell, according to the author, the binge drinking statistics are alarming since more and more young people are concerned by this phenomenon.
