Extrait / Introduction :
Winston Smith lives in an England which has become Airstrip One, part of the territory of Oceania, a huge empire encompassing Britain and the Americas. The totalitarian regime of Oceania is led by Big Brother, a figure at once comforting and terrifying. The citizens of Oceania (split conveniently into Party members and “proles” (proletariat)) are constantly under surveillance from the Thought-Police and privacy is impossible due to the “telescreens” (television and security camera-like devices) found in every apartment and public place. In this atmosphere of complete social control, Winston is a misfit. He remembers the past and he remembers that is wasn't quite the way that the authorities say it was. For a start, according to them Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia, but he distinctly remembers it being at war with East Asia less than five years ago , and he is sure that the Party didn't invent aeroplanes.Plan

Winston
Smith lives in an England which has become Airstrip One, part of the
territory of Oceania, a huge empire encompassing Britain and the
Americas. The totalitarian regime of Oceania is led by Big Brother, a
figure at once comforting and terrifying. The citizens of Oceania
(split conveniently into Party members and ?proles?
(proletariat)) are constantly under surveillance from the
Thought-Police and privacy is impossible due to the ?telescreens?
(television
and security
camera-like
devices) found
in every apartment and public place.
In this atmosphere of
complete social control, Winston is a misfit. He remembers the past
and he remembers that is wasn't quite the way that the authorities
say it was. For a start, according to them Oceania has always been at
war with Eurasia, but he distinctly remembers it being at war with
East Asia less than five years ago , and he is sure that the Party
didn't invent aeroplanes.
But despite his feelings of dissent, Winston conforms like everyone else, until, one day, he meets Julia, a young and apparently devoted member of the party. She shows him that there are ways of avoiding the Thought-Police and gives him hope that, perhaps, the Party can be beaten. He decides to get involved with the « Brotherhood », the organisation devoted to the overthrow of the regime, but doesn't know how to. That is until he is approached by O'Brien, a top party official, who reveals himself to be a member of the Brotherhood.
The subject of the right to privacy is a hot topic of debate today. Is privacy being eroded in the workplace and in other areas of your daily lives? Why is the right to privacy becoming a major issue in today's society? In a nutshell, is Big Brother watching us today?
As I live in a democracy where I enjoy basic fundamental rights (freedom of the press, speech, movement). I don't know why Big Brother should bother me. There are no dictators breathing down my neck and my telephone is not being tapped by the ?Thought Police?.
